About
Max Nissenholtz, Artist
I moved from Saint Louis, Missouri, to New York City as a young man to pursue a masters degree in painting from Pratt Institute of Fine Arts. After graduation I became a member of United Scenic Artists, Local 829, and embarked on a forty year career, painting scenery for Broadway theater productions, the Metropolitan Opera House and dozens of movie and TV productions in NYC.
Those years were a profound and transformative experience. I worked with some of the most skilled and talented painters and designers in the world. My art ideas and techniques expanded dramatically. I am now retired, living in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico, and once again working in fine art.
Saint Louis, New York and Morelia are completely and utterly different cities; each with unique histories and its own cultural identity. I have adapted, assimilated and soaked up the local culture with great enthusiasm in each of those cities. Art, architecture, music, theater, dance, fashion, and the culinary arts are ingrained in my perception, and they are integral elements of Mexican life. I am surrounded by a vibrant, living culture.
Art has been the single constant thread in my life. It is a powerful force guiding and pushing me through all the dramatic changes of life. Morelia is a wonderful place to live and work. I am grateful to the art spirit for bringing me here.
The collection presented on this website is current and part of on-going projects for exhibition. I encourage you to spend a little time exploring my recent work.
