MAX NISSENHOLTZ
As a young man, I moved from St. Louis, Missouri, to New York City to pursue a master’s degree in painting at the Pratt Institute of Fine Arts. After graduating, I became a member of the United Scenic Artists union, Local 829, and embarked on a four-decade career as a scenic painter for Broadway and Metropolitan Opera House productions, as well as for dozens of film and television productions in New York.
Those years were a profound and transformative experience. I worked with some of the most skilled and talented painters and designers in the world. My artistic ideas and techniques expanded dramatically. Now retired, I live in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico, and am once again dedicated to art.
San Luis, New York, and Morelia are vastly different cities, each with its own unique history and cultural identity. I have enthusiastically absorbed and embraced the local culture in each of these cities. Art, architecture, music, theater, dance, fashion, and culinary arts are deeply ingrained in my perception and integral to daily life in Mexico. I am surrounded by a vibrant and living culture.
Art has been the only constant thread in my life; it is a powerful force that guides and propels me through all of life’s dramatic changes. Morelia is a wonderful place to live and work. I am grateful to the spirit of art for bringing me here.
The work presented on this website is current and part of a series of ongoing projects intended for exhibition. I encourage viewers to take some time to explore my most recent work.As a young man, I moved from St. Louis, Missouri, to New York City to pursue a master’s degree in painting at the Pratt Institute of Fine Arts.
